You have just started studying at Michigan State University, you are planning to, or just going to visit? Then you’d better prepare for the Spartan Spirit!
What do I mean by Spartan Spirit? It’s everywhere – people wearing MSU branded hats, shorts, T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, wristbands… People having the Spartan Helmet on their key holders, their panties or boxers, or even… tattooed on any part of their bodies you can think of. The Spartan Spirit is huge and it does create an incredibly strong sense of community! Do not get surprised if someone walking in the street passes by your group of friends and shouts “Go Green!” - just be ready to answer even louder “GO WHITE!” Everything is green and white here! I’m starting to think that some of us maybe even recycle just in order to get Greener, rather than simply preserve nature!
This post is dedicated to the Spartan Spirit. Once you are aware of it get ready to Paint the Rock. The rock is a real rock, which has been donated by a group of students who started the tradition of painting it. On first hearing donating a rock may sound a bit absurd, but once you’ve experienced painting it… you will definitely start thinking of the institutions you’ve visited so far, to whom you could donate a rock! How about your elementary school or your high-school? Maybe the prison you’ve been to? Every institution has to have a rock... or at least an equivalent tool for binding different people together.
There are some rules you have to bear in mind painting the rock, though. You can paint anything you want, as long as it does not offend anyone. You can paint it only during the night, so that everyone can see it on the next day. Get ready to guard it from 6 a.m. in the morning in order to be sure that YOU will get a chance to paint it in the evening! Then after you’ve painted it, prepare for a sleepless night guarding YOUR rock from being painted by others! It is a big deal, indeed - the demand for painting the rock is enormous!
While I'm calculating the expenses for paint, brushes and spray, enjoy some pictures of the rock. Go Green, guys!
